Background Information
Autophagy is a mechanism, by which bulky cell constituents are degraded collectively and non-selectively via a lysosomal/vacuolar system.  It contributes to quality control of the cytoplasm, playing important roles in cell growth and differentiation. Impairment of autophagy has been implicated in the progress of, for example, cancer and neuromuscular diseases.  Autophagy has been recently attracting more attention in connection with cell death and microbial infection.
The International Symposium on Autophagy (ISA) was originally formed to present and discuss unpublished data in order to elucidate the mechanisms of macroautophagy, microautophagy, and pexophagy in yeasts and mammalian cells.  The symposium has also focused on newly discovered functions of autophagy in diverse fields of biology and pathobiology.  The 1st ISA, was organized by Yosinori Ohsumi, and held at Okazaki, Japan, in 1997.  The 2nd ISA was organized by Patrice Codogno, and held at Aix-les-Bains, France, in 2000.  And the 3rd ISA was organized by Yasuo Uchiyama and held at Osaka University Medical School, Japan in 2002.
The fourth ISA, organized by Eiki Kominami, will be held at Toray Conference Hall in Mishima, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.  The symposium will start at 17:00 on Sunday October 1, 2006 with two plenary lectures by Daniel J. Klionsky and Shigekazu Nagata, followed by a social party.  Registration will begin at 15:00. Four oral sessions are scheduled for October 2 to October 5. In addition, two poster presentations will be held in the evenings of October 2 and 4.  The conference will end at 12:00 noon on Thursday October 5.
